Ephesus was constructed in 6000 BC and it quickly grew such that by the 1st century, it was the largest city in the Mediterranean and had over 250,000 people. The city was very strong and due to this it survived great wars. For example, it survived Greco-Persian wars and Cimmerian attacks.
